At the 2024 UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), Ms. Tani from Djibouti was a lead negotiator on behalf of the African Group, focusing on a controversial resolution concerning Solar Radiation Management (SRM). Ms. Tani was instrumental in advancing the precautionary principle and highlighting the African call for the establishment of an International Non-Use Agreement on Solar Geoengineering in alignment with the 2023 Decision 19/5 by African ministers at the 19th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). Her efforts were pivotal in articulating and affirming the African stance on the dangers and ungovernability associated with SRM, which led to the eventual withdrawal of the contested resolution at UNEA.
Ms. Tani holds an Executive Master in Managing Peace and Security in Africa from the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) at Addis Ababa University and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. She is fluent in French, Somali, Arabic, and English. At the Science Summit during UNGA79, Ms. Tani will provide insights into the environmental, social, legal, and geopolitical dimensions of SRM from an African perspective, and why Africa as a marginalised region is highlighting the importance of establishing a non-use agreement. Her perspectives and in-depth experience in multilateral negotiations will enrich the discussions on how to shape a coherent and precautionary path forward in international climate policy.
