Michel Hamala Sidibé: Champion of Health Equity and African-Led Solutions
Michel Hamala Sidibé is a relentless advocate for health equity and African-led solutions. As the African Union’s Special Envoy for the African Medicines Agency (AMA), Sidibé drove the rapid ratification of the AMA Treaty, achieving its entry into force by November 2021—far ahead of expectations.
A former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Director of UNAIDS, and Mali’s Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Sidibé’s 40+ years in global health have consistently prioritized people-centered policies. His vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths inspired global action and reshaped global HIV efforts. His 90-90-90 targets became a transformative framework, ensuring that over 25 million people gained access to life-saving treatment under his leadership at UNAIDS.
Sidibé’s unwavering commitment to Africa’s health sovereignty remains at the core of his work. He has tirelessly championed local pharmaceutical production and better access to high-quality medicines and vaccines. As Founder and Director General of MSAS, he continues to shape Africa’s healthcare landscape, aligning his strategies with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision.
An economist by training, Sidibé’s groundbreaking contributions have earned him international recognition, including honorary doctorates and a seat on the Global Commission on Drug Policy. His mission is clear: advance Africa’s health self- reliance and dismantle global inequities.
