Maria Weir
Maria Weir is the Vice President of Applied Research, Innovation, and Product Development at Areopa, where she has led initiatives in Intellectual Capital (IC) management since 2010. Alongside her role at Areopa, she serves as a visiting professor at Solvay Management School (ULB) and Thomas More in Mechelen (KU Leuven).
An established author, Maria has published extensively on managing IC in Knowledge-Intensive Business Services (KIBS) firms, SMEs, renewable energy companies, and public policy, including her widely recognized work “Intellectual Assets and Public Policy” (Journal of Intellectual Capital, 2007).
Her current research focuses on valuing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors within an IC framework, aligning with International Accounting Standards IAS 38 and 34. Maria’s work examines how businesses leverage IC for innovation, adapting business models, and achieving competitive advantage.
Before joining Areopa, she accumulated over 20 years of experience across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, where she developed expertise in managing intangible assets such as intellectual property rights, brand management, and the commercialization of innovation.
