About me
Dr. Ute Klarmann-Schulz is a group leader at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and
Parasitology (IMMIP), University Hospital Bonn, Germany. She has been working at IMMIP since
2007, first as a postdoc and since 2016 as a group leader. Her group is mainly involved in supporting
clinical trials in Africa in the field of neglected tropical diseases, with a focus on onchocerciasis and
lymphatic filariasis. The group covers a wide range of tasks, from project management, quality and
data management to laboratory and statistical analysis, which are essential for the conduct of clinical
trials. Dr. Ute Klarmann-Schulz and her team have already supported more than 10 clinical trials in
Ghana, Tanzania and Cameroon. Since 2016 Dr. Ute Klarmann-Schulz is one of the PIs of the TAKeOFF
project (https://projekttraeger.dlr.de/media/gesundheit/GF/BMBF-RHISSA-Bridging-
Conference_PB_TAKeOFF_01.pdf) which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and
Research. In addition, Dr. Klarmann-Schulz, together with her team and in collaboration with
Capgemini, is in the process of developing an AI that will help analyze onchocerciasis nodules and
thus accelerate the histological analyses for efficacy testing.
